.
Dance is by its nature the expression of emotions, feelings and opinions through the movement and manipulation of the body. Dance very often finds itself in the form of telling a story or conveying emotion through choreography, set to a corresponding music score.
Dance is therefore a vital form of expression; a medium which can be used to convey a message effectively and powerfully. There is something about the beauty of seeing a highly trained and skilled body moving with ease and grace through choreography that causes us to watch and take note. Combined with an emotive music score, dance is a powerful tool.
Traditionally used as an art form by which stories and tales could be remembered and passed down over the ages; dance has also developed into a show of the perfection of the human body and a display of the great feats that dedication and training can achieve. It is a celebration of life itself.
I feel that dance should be more widely accessed as a tool to convey ideas and messages; maybe alert an audience of an issue; or simply convey a story with great meaning. Imagine if, instead of political adverts on television during election time, a short dance piece was shown to portray a party's policies. Imagine how effective and emotionally powerful this could be; you would certainly remember it. Maybe it would seem to be more relevant to you than a politician droning on? Ultimately I believe that we under-appreciate the importance of dance and so we under-use it; a great loss for both the dance world and ourselves.
